When Greek cinema meets the Greek literature the result is excellent! A very interesting Greek movie came out in December 2013 : the movie ‘Little England’ directed by Pantelis Voulgaris and based on the book by author Ioanna Karystiani. The book was first released in 1997 and won the State Prize.
It is a romantic drama that takes place on the island of Andros from 1930 till 1950.Apart from the drama that takes place within one family (two sisters who love the same man), the film incorporates the historical context (The Interwar Years and World War II), the social structure of the island and its landscape. It all has an impact on the lives of the main characters in the movie.
The story takes place in the capital of the island, Andros town. Andros is traditionally the island of seafarers and ship-owners, which even competed with the shipping of Great Britain. This is why it has been nicknamed “Mikra Anglia” (“Little England”). The story narrates the difficult life of seafarers’ families. Women were raising their children alone, waiting for their husbands to return after many years and always living with the anxiety that “they might not come back”. While watching the film, we discover the social conventions of the island, the matriarchal structure and the need for social advancement and power.
At the same time we discover the beauties of a Cycladic island, although different from other Cycladic islands: Andros combines the beauty of the sea with the green landscapes and the mountains. The movie introduces you to a different picture of Andros without the tourist clichés.
Have a look at the trailer of the movie:
Since 2010 Omilo organizes Greek courses on the island of Andros during the month of July. During those courses the students have the opportunity to visit Andros town, its museums and beaches. After seeing the movie, you will for sure recognize most scenery of the movie. You might then want to visit the island with us to know it better!
